Most people tend to think of boat racing as the sort of sport enjoyed by upper crust types in their finest yachting wear. Nothing shatters that misconception faster than watching two speedboats haul ass through a quarter-mile of water at 250 miles per hour.

It’s safe to say you should forget about sporting your deck shoes and J-Crew apparel when attending this weekend’s Lucas Oil Mayfest Drag Boat Festival at Firebird Raceway, 20000 South Maricopa Road in Chandler. Competitors including Darryl Erhlich, who set a new-world record at Firebird last November, will hit the water at warp speed starting on Friday, May 27, during the three-day nitro-fueled racing event.

Preliminary races happen the first two days, with the finals taking place on Sunday. Gates open at 9 a.m. each day.

Fri., May 27, 10 a.m.; Sat., May 28, 7 a.m.; Sun., May 29, 7 a.m., 2011
