It hardly seems dignified that powerhouse college football teams open their seasons against creampuffs. C’mon… Nebraska against Florida Central? Oregon vs. South Dakota? And closer to home, there’s ASU Sun Devils against Weber State, who went 2-10 last year in the paltry Big Sky Conference. These “games” seem simply set-up to add that first notch in the win column. Then again, given that ASU faces eight 2013 bowl teams this season, an easy start may get that needed confidence flowing. ASU will benefit from some game action in locking down the starting line-ups and top backups for when the big boys come to town. Expectations are high, given that the 2013 Sun Devils won the Pac-12 South championship, defended the Territorial Cup against Arizona University, and won a surprising 10 games. But they’ve got to get past the Weber State Wildcats — who certainly hope to be David against ASU’s Goliath.

ASU battles the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 28, at Sun Devil Stadium, 500 East Veterans Way, Tempe. Tickets range from $25 to $325. Call 480-965-5812 or visit www.thesundevils.com.
