Rhythm is a primal thing; the driving force behind all music, be it lurching stoner metal or glitchy dubstep.

It’s also the all-encompassing concept that drives Street Beat, the work of L.A.-based director Ben Hansen. The seven-member crew of percussionists, dancers and musicians drum on buckets, barrels, and their own bodies, tapping into a virtual history of such rhythm-based musical genres as jazz, Latin, Cuban and hip-hop.

A native of Denmark, Hansen has established his troupe as one of the premier street drumming companies in America, showcasing their “tribal journey through the urban age.”

Hansen and his band of bangers visit the Chandler Center for the Arts, 250 North Arizona Avenue in Chandler, on Friday, April 8, taking over the theater to display their unique blend of street-level grooves.
