In 2008, after a career in the Army Special Forces, Jason McCarthy founded GORUCK, a company that produces rucksacks tough enough for Green Berets. To test the materials, he sent them to his Army buddies, who would take them into combat and critique their quality. But McCarthy disliked the idea of sending unproven gear to war, so he designed the GORUCK Challenge, an event patterned after Special Forces training, to test the durability of his gear — and that of the people wearing it.
Should you choose to participate in the GORUCK Challenge, you will arrive at 1 a.m. at an as-yet-undisclosed location (the event’s starting point will be posted to www.goruck.com/events/details/711 the week of the challenge). You will then, under the direction of a GORUCK cadre, complete tasks across 15 to 20 miles, over the course of eight to 10 hours, all while wearing a backpack full of bricks. Good ruck.
