If you’ve stepped foot inside inside the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art recently, you may have noticed that things are just a few shades different than normal.
Okay, make that many shades. That’s because sister organizations, Scottsdale Public Arts and SMoCA have teamed up once again to make the Old Town arts community a little more colorful by hiring Hurley brand artist James “Dalek” Marshall.

Marshall, who is best known for his vibrant abstract works in the realm of skateboarding and graffiti, was commissioned in May to add some much-needed color to SMoCA’s outdoor courtyard, gift shop, and the SMoCa Lounge, which until recently had featured the monochromatic design work of artist Janis Leonard.

The project, known as Shift, was finished earlier this week and features more than 60 different colors arranged in geometric gradients from pink to yellow and blue to green. This technicolor facelift is intended as a cohesive addition to other permanent works installed at SMoCA, including Knight Rise by James Turrell and Scrim Wall by James Carpenter and Associates.
To view Shift, visit SMoCA during regular museum hours (noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday, or noon to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.)
