The Arizona Derby Dames just may be the most brutal of all the sports leagues in the Valley. Leave aside the violence inherent to the sport — the ladies never take a real break. Professional footballers take a seven-month off-season to recover from their on-season; basketball and hockey players have a solid four months off; and even baseball players get to take the winter off. The Derby Dames, however, take barely any time between seasons to lick their wounds.
Just one month after playing for the league title, the Brutal Beauties will open the league’s 10th season on Saturday, September 13, at the Derby Dames Warehouse, 2517 West McDowell Road, against the Bombshells. The match is part of a doubleheader that will also feature a showdown between the Coffin Draggers and Schoolyard Scrappers, two teams that fell just short in last year’s playoffs. The bout begins at 7 p.m. Tickets start at $15.
