New Times has confirmed with the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office that longtime downtown Phoenix artist Steve Bass was the driver of the Dodge 3500 pick-up truck that collided head-on with a car carrying three Yavapai County Sheriff’s detention officers over the weekend.
Officers Brian Callaghan, John Schultz, and Jose Presas died as a result of the crash, which occurred at approximately 6:15 a.m. Saturday on State Route 169 near Dewey, Arizona. According to DPS, Bass is in critical condition at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix. (New Times‘ information request to Good Samaritan went unanswered.)
