Today’s teens have it easy. Anything they want to know about the hazards of growing up is available literally at their fingertips. Before Internet connectivity, kids had to learn about touchy subjects from wonderfully awkward (and unintentionally hilarious) film strips.

During RetroSpectacular: Scared Straight, local historian and pop culture lover Marshall Shore will present a selection of those vintage coming-of-age educational movies at FilmBar.

With acting performances ranging from wooden to overwrought, the celluloid projected in classrooms from the ‘50s through the ‘80s took on the perils of puberty, drug use, and driving. Shore’s culled a collection of the eye-roll-inducing flicks and will screen them at 7 p.m.
Mon., Oct. 24, 7 p.m., 2011
