“Dream” is a powerful and politically charged word. Abraham Lincoln once said, “My dream is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last best hope of earth.” Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech is one of the most famous in history. And in more modern history, DREAM is an acronym for the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, which gives residency status to hardworking illegal students.

The Arizona DREAM Act Coalition will present its first art exhibit, “Illustrated Dreams,” at Alwun House, 1204 East Roosevelt Street. For the show, featured artist Carla Chavarria painted the faces and bodies of fellow Dreamers, supporters, and local celebrities and photographed the results. Chavarria hopes to introduce audiences to the iDREAM campaign while clearing up misconceptions about it.

Social movements and art have always gone together, she points out. “I wanted to promote the DREAM Act in a visually attractive way without getting too political, and where everyone can be involved one way or another,” says Chavarria.

Tuesdays-Fridays, 12-6 p.m. Starts: Aug. 5. Continues through Aug. 26, 2011
