The modern wave of cinematic superheroes – Marvel’s, especially – have lost a great deal in translation from page to screen, but a couple have fallen through Hollywood’s high-concept cracks to become iconic. The most surprising is last year’s Iron Man, in which that mercurial bust of an actor Robert Downey Jr. revived his drug-tarnished career by flying around in a metallic monkey suit. It wasn’t a great movie, but it was still fuckin’ great.

Downey’s star turn as Shellhead kicks off Westgate City Center’s monthlong WaterDance Summer Blockbusters series at 8 p.m. Friday, June 5. In addition to Iron Man, the superhero film fest – featuring free flicks shown on a 30-by-50-foot HD/LED outdoor screen – includes Michael Bay’s Transformers (2007), Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man (2002), and Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns (2006).
