Human beings have a unique talent for believing they’re discovering patterns, though those patterns actually don’t exist. This explains why people dump small fortunes into slot machines, why it seems like the number 23 is following you everywhere, and why Phoenix Coyotes fans were expecting big things from the team this year. The Desert Dogs have been on a steady upward trajectory since Dave Tippett took the reigns as coach in 2009. Last year, the Coyotes found themselves in the conference finals. So we know by syllogism the Coyotes should be Stanley Cup-bound this year.

The Coyotes’ season of destiny has not gone according to plan. They started the season with an abysmal 1-4-0. In a strike-shortened season, that slow start leaves them with precious little time to climb out of the cellar. With this in mind, the Coyotes almost have to find a way to steal 3 points from the red-hot Chicago Blackhawks when the two teams face off at Jobing Arena.
