While writing is in Andre Dubus III’s blood, he held more than a half-dozen jobs – everything from bartender to bounty hunter – before settling in as an author.
It might be this range of occupations that allows Dubus to explore the mindset of multiple characters in his latest, The Garden of Last Days. In the book, the Newbury, Massachusetts, scribe sets the scene in Florida, where April, a stripper, encounters Bassam, a soon-to-be 9/11 terrorist. At more than 500 pages, Dubus’ book explores people’s motivations beyond their initial black and white.
Dubus – whose House of Sand and Fog managed a nod from Oprah’s Book Club as well as finalist status for the National Book Award – reads from and signs copies of his new tome at Changing Hands Bookstore.
