We spend time with our parents mainly to see what we’ll be like in the future. Sports teams, of course, don’t have the luxury of genetic parents, which is why we’ll be at Chase Field for today’s game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Florida Marlins.

In 1997, the Marlins became the youngest franchise to win a World Series when Craig Counsell scored the winning run in a dramatic seventh game. This was followed by six forgettable seasons, a shocking title run, and then three more forgettable seasons. If this all sounds familiar, it’s because the D-Backs have been following the same script since Counsell crossed the plate to win the 2001 World Series for AZ.
