A good rule of thumb for Cinco de Mayo: If you can correctly spell “chihuahua,” then you need another margarita. In fact, if you can correctly spell your first name — well, you get the picture.
Fortunately, you’ll be able to get your fill of tequila and tiny dogs on Saturday, May 3 (this year’s de facto “cinco”), during downtown Chandler’s annual Cinco De Mayo Festival & Chihuahua Races.
Sure, us Arizonans have adopted a lot from Latino culture, but how many of those things can you put a tiny, bedazzled T-shirt on and send down a racetrack? Indeed, not only will cash prizes be awarded for the speediest Gonzaleses, but the hippest chihuahuas will be crowned “king” and “queen” as well. The free, family-friendly fiesta kicks off at 9 a.m. in the public library courtyard at 100 East Commonwealth. Visit www.chandleraz.gov or call 480-310-2018 for details.
