If you missed Venus’ transit across the Sun yesterday afternoon, you’re bound to run across a few blurry photos and friends who are still claiming to have stared at the sun long enough to have seen the planet’s visible path.
Local artist Dayvid LeMmon made the photo above, with his friend Yves Amu Klein’s Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector telescope. “He used a sun filter and a sunspot enhancing filter to make the image visible to the naked eye (and iPhone!) without damage,” writes LeMmon. “We did partially melt a camera on another scope when one of the sun filters flew off in the breeze, but a thorough wipe of the CCD brought it back into service.”
