Chances are, at some point you’ve written a poem. Maybe it was the love sonnet you wrote for your third-grade crush, or a rap song you penned during your Vanilla Ice phase. Or what about the “Edward is a hottie, Jacob is a nottie” rhyme you texted your bff after seeing New Moon? Yes, even that counts as poetry, says ASU Regents’ Professor and author Alberto Rios.
“Poetry in its traditional forms has its place, but so does poetry in nontraditional forms — jokes, rap, tweeting, menu descriptions of food,” says Rios, who’s authored 10 books, and whose poems have been published in more than 200 anthologies. “The word, in all its incarnations, is everywhere.”
Rios reads from his memoir and latest book, The Dangerous Shirt, during the Museum Heart Series Poetry Reading. The event will also feature a reading by one of Rios’ students, ASU MFA candidate Brian Diamond.
