To a degree, Raul Malo summed up his own career with “What a Crying Shame,” from The Mavericks’ excellent ’94 disc of the same name. With that tune, the star-crossed Floridian also created a standard. Though The Mavs would craft many more – including stunning rethinkings of Hank Williams’ “Hey Good Lookin’” and Bruce Springsteen’s “All That Heaven Will Allow” – they just never seemed to fit in. That’s what happens when a rockin’ crew from Miami with heavy Latin underpinnings is signed as – huh? – a Nashville-country band.
After a seven-year dearth of original material, the mighty-throated Malo is back in support of his solo disc Lucky One. This time, he’s positively wallowing in the kitchen-sink approach with a sound that incorporates everything from golden-age honky-tonk to Tex-Mex to jazz.
Expect Malo’s sonic boom of a baritone to rattle the cozy rafters at the Rhythm Room.
