Last fall’s inaugural Cancer Treatment Centers of America Tennis Championships overcame the dubious moniker (sponsorship is important, but please) and setting (hell and gone in a boondock Phoenix suburb) with a whiz-bang championship match for the ages: John McEnroe took down Todd Martin in an old-fashioned barn-burner, 3-6, 7-6, 11-9.

This year’s edition, back at Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex features another strong field, including Andre Agassi, Mark Philippoussis, Jim Courier, Mats Wilander, Wayne Ferreira, Aaron Krickstein, Mikael Pernfors, and 15-year-old Jimmy Arias. The tourney opens at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 8, with Session 1 quarterfinal matches pitting Philippoussis against Ferreira and Courier versus Krickstein. The finals are October 11.
