We’re glad that most of the antagonistic talk between rappers featured in those Beef DVDs and countless web videos seem to be in remission. It’s idle chatter to hear some mix-tape, 16-bar spitter talk about going to war when you have a group like Sierra Leone’s Refugee All-Stars escaping real horrors through music.
While seeking safety from the Sierra Leone Civil War (1991-2002), the musicians and songwriters of the All-Stars found each other in the neighboring West African nation of Guinea and discovered comfort in creating music. A documentary film in 2005 brought their story to the world, and 2010 sees the release of their second album, Rise and Shine.
The group’s spirited reggae-tinged African grooves will touch the sky at the brand-new Musical Instrument Museum.
