Never is a fish be more out of the water than in desert environments. That’s the basic premise behind artist Joe McAuliffe’s current exhibit at the Desert Botanical Garden. McAuliffe, who doubles as the Botanical Garden’s and research ecologist and director of research, utilizes gyotaku impressions of fish taken from area rivers, lakes, ponds and canals. It’s an ancient Japanese art form used to tell stories—in this case, McAuliffe’s history with and love of conservation, natural history and the eternally close ties between fish and humans.
