The Wisdom of the Metal Gods Vs. The Meditations of Hip-Hop MCs

I just received a book titled Time Flies When You’re In a Coma: The Wisdom of the Metal Gods (A Plume Book), a funny little tome filled with lyrical adages from the world of heavy metal music. Edited by Mike Daly (formerly of alt. country band Whiskeytown), the book is divided into four sections: Meditations, Zen Questions, Daily Affirmations, and Words of Wisdom. The glossy, full-color format of the book is slick, but after reading through it, I was still lacking enlightenment, so I turned to the gurus of another genre: hip-hop.

Phoenix Author Tania Katan Says Her Upcoming Workshop Is “Not for Masochists”

One-woman show Tania Katan speaks with enthusiasm on her voice mail — she speaks with enthusiasm about most things. The 37 year-old author, playwright, performer, and writing instructor manages to take a creative and humorous approach to real-life tough topics like surviving cancer and gay rights, and she’s become a brand unto herself over the past two years.

The Final Bad Xmas Pageant

Sure, sure, everybody’s been to the holiday pageants with the recreation of the nativity scene and the singing of the Christmas carols and the warm, fuzzy feelings that Christmas brings with it. But for those ready to hang themselves with a string of Christmas lights at the thought of being…

Night Train: Center Parkway/Washington (Stop #20)

Where: Rolling Hills Golf Course (1415 N. Mill Ave.) is a 10 to 15 minute walk, uphill, from the station. Drink: A pitcher of Bud Light ($6.50) Scene: Our lofty goal with this bar crawl was to find someplace at every stop that was within walking distance and not actually…

Wu Tang Clan Brings Da Rukus at Marquee Theatre on Dec. 7

The last time I saw Wu Tang Clan was possibly the most disappointing concert-going experience of my life. I was in high school when the boys from Staten Island stopped by Cleveland to open for Rage Against The Machine. It was awful. They were over an hour late — O.D.B. having gotten arrested…

Phooson: Picture This!

We’ve got photos of Katy Perry, Rihanna, Fallout Boy, Tokio Hotel, The Pussycat Dolls, Jesse McCartney and even Paula Abdul. Check out your favorite Phooson artist in our Phooson 2008 slide show. — Photos by Luke Holwerda…

Phooson: Let’s Go to the Tape

So you missed last night’s Phooson 2008? No worries. We’ve got you covered with a few concert highlights from Katy Perry, Tokyo Hotel, Fallout Boy and The Pussycat Dolls. It seems Rihanna was a bit camera shy when it came to video unfortunately. Don’t ask us why, we think she…

Night Train: Veterans Way/College Avenue (Stop #22)

Where: Paradise Hawaiian BBQ (580 S. College Ave. #103) is a 3 minute walk from the stop. East from the station, then south on College Ave. Drink: Kona Longboard Island Lager, $5 for a draft. Scene: If it’s game day you’ll have no problem getting a free beer at this…

Phooson: Rihanna’s the Star

She’s not yet old enough to drink, but there’s no doubt Rihanna’s the biggest star at Cricket tonight. Her set has been incredibly mature and she’s got a confidence most performers never develop. On the ballads and the bangers she’s sounded great. “S.O.S” was fun and she’s currently killing “Umbrella.”…

Phooson: Multimedia Is Forthcoming

To all those Phoosoners out there: we hope you enjoyed our posts about tonight’s show. We’re currently hard at work preparing some eye candy to go along with these posts. Check back later for a slide show from tonight and a little video action as well. — Jonathan McNamara…

Phooson: Pussycat Dolls Are Such Bad Lip-Synchers

So i’ve seen some bad lip-synchers, but the Pussycat Dolls pretty much take the cake. At times none of them were even trying to hold a mic near their face. At one point one of the Dolls introduced them as a dancing-singing group and the description was apt, as they…

Phooson: Katy Perry’s Better With a Backing Track

So Katy Perry just finished her set without playing “Ur So Gay” which is pretty sad. She also played “I Kissed A Girl” with her backing band, which normally would be pretty cool, but they were surprisingly bad for a group of professional musicians. She sounded much better with a…

Phooson: Bathrooms and Beers

As expected, it’s kind of a kiddish and heavily female crowd out here at Phooson. The line for the little girl’s room was halfway to the parking lot, while guys like me had a nice short wait. The beer line, on the other hand was nice and short for everyone…

Phooson: We’re Here

So we’re on the ground here at Phooson 2008. And, no, we’re not at the Pinal County Fairgrounds, where last year’s event was held.Though the, ahem, extremely lo-fi Phooson website hasn’t been updated in a year, the show is at Cricket Wireless Pavilion, which, semi-ironically, has no reliable wireless access for us to update…
