On Sunday, the Gilbert location of Gelato Dolce Vita, the three-year-old spot of top-notch gelato in the SanTan Village mall, closed its doors.
Owners of the store, Walter and Marti Bergamaschi — who attended Gelato University near Bologna and apprenticed in two different shops before bringing their expertise in Italian gelato to the Valley — cited a non-renewable option on their lease as the reason for the shuttering.
The Bergamaschi’s original location of Gelato Dolce Vita, which opened in Mesa in 2006, as well as Dolce Vita Italian Grocer, the couple’s year-old Italian eatery and grocery next door, remain open.

A message on Gelato Dolce Vita’s Facebook page reads as follows:
“To all our Gilbert fans: Our lease is up — we had no option to renew. So, this is our LAST weekend at our Gilbert location, closing this Sunday July 28th. We want to thank all of our loyal fans who have made these 3 years a success and a joy to be there. As a reminder, our Mesa location will remain open. We are on the SE corner of Higley and Brown, with our Italian grocer/deli.”
