Those of you waiting to dive into the bloody world of Panem ritual battle royale this Friday might want to whet your appetite by checking out two unofficial Hunger Games inspired cookbooks.
Both were written and published by fans of the series, but the first is a particularly slick volume. The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook, by Emily Ansara Baines, seeks to recreate pretty much every meal eaten by the protagonists in the Hunger Games series. There’s Katniss’ Favorite Lamb Stew with Dried Plums, Rue’s Roasted Parsnips, and the ominously named Capitol-Grade Dark Chocolate Cake. Not a bad spread for a post-apocalyptic dystopian dinner.
“An Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook and Survival Guide” lacks the pro-am polish of the other unofficial Hunger Games cookbook. Instead, it not only recreates dishes from the books but also teaches the basic survival skills required to procure some of those ingredients. Thankfully, in the case of the “Wild Dog Stew,” the author clearly states in the introduction that, “…not one dog was hurt during this process.”
A warning to the parents (or spouses) of Hunger Games fanatics: This cookbook includes recipes for distilling and brewing alcoholic beverages. Adult supervision may be required.
