Khyber Halal recently opened near the corner of East Indian School and 24th Street. Co-owned Mohammed Safi and Fahima Hassan, the 84 item menu is evenly split between Pakistani and Afghani cuisine. Mohammed and Fahima sharing cooking duties with Mohammed’s wife, Mamooma. The restaurant’s name references Khyber Pass, the historical gateway from northern Pakistan to Afghanistan.

Khyber Halal offers kebabs, curry, korma and many other dishes including vegetarian options. Drawing upon the cuisine of two diverse countries means they offer some truly unique dishes like mantu, an Afghani version of Chinese dumplings.

Safi said his favorite dish is Uzbek pulao: a grilled skewer of flavorful ground beef atop a mound of carrot and raisin flavored rice.
