One of the most refreshing and exciting parts of hitting up local farmers markets is finding local farmers who have unique offerings that are locally grown and hard to find in traditional brick-and-mortar markets. Sri’s Fruites and Vegetables often has typical produce selections, like kale and cabbage, but also offers a specialization in Asian cooking staples like lemongrass, fresh turmeric, and Kaffir lime leaves. Since we’re knees deep in citrus season in the Valley, the two varieties of kumquats at the Sri’s stand were an obvious choice for seasonal local produce that’s not your run-of-the-mill navel orange.

Where to Pick It Up: Ahwatukee Farmer’s Market, open Sunday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
What Else to Grab: Kaffir Lime Leaves ($2), Fresh Turmeric ($2)
At the market, the two varieties are labeled kumquats and “lemon lime quates,” which are orange and yellow respectively and about the size and shape of a quail egg. The little fruit may not be your go-to citrus pick (maybe because its genus classification bounces between being Citrus and Fortunella), but it’s definitely fun to work with due to its sweet, edible peel and tart insides. You can use kumquats in salads, eat them whole, or even grill them. However, the acidity lends itself nicely to marmalades and other sauces, as well. The intense tartness pairs well with duck and other gamy fowls, but we can also see great application for cocktails. Kumquat margaritas, anyone?
