A “Recipe for Disaster Dinner” doesn’t exactly sound like the kind of thing with which Mark Tarbell, Iron Chef winner Beau MacMillan, or Southwestern-cuisine guru Barbara Fenzl would be associated.

But the trio of powerhouse chefs won’t be in the kitchen for the Childsplay event — ironically, they’re leaving that to actors who will be presenting “Recipe for Disaster!” a slapstick comedy about kitchen chaos that takes place in a cooking school.

The theme for the Recipe for Disaster Gala takes its cue from the original play Recipe for Disaster, which involves a pair of master chefs whose competitive natures cause culinary chaos for one young apprentice. The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 at the Tempe Center for the Arts.

Before a VIP performance of the play from one of the Valley’s best children’s theater troupes, attendees will enjoy a cocktail hour with live jazz music by JAZZology. There also will be a silent auction with prizes focused on fine dining, food, and cooking experiences.

Following the show, there’ll be a five-course dinner with food inspired by the show. That’s also when you’ll be able to catch Tarbell, MacMillan, and Fenzl as they share stories from their illustrious culinary careers.

Also available for purchase will be a Childplay cookbook with recipes from chefs around the Valley and the Childsplay Ensemble.

Tickets for the fundraising event cost $250 a person and can be purchased at the Childsplay website. For more information visit the website or contact Jodie Weiss at jweiss@childsplayaz.org or 480-921-5761.
