Landmark Phoenix ice cream parlor Mary Coyle’s Ol’ Fashion Ice Cream & Yogurt is on its way out, right as the Valley’s starting to warm up after a blip of a winter.
Business has taken a hit while the cost of ingredients has gone up, according to an article in the Republic. Bob Kelly, who owns the 60-year-old business, says he hopes to sell Mary Coyle’s before he ends up shutting it down by May 31.
It’s stunning news, given the proliferation of frozen yogurt and gelato businesses around town, and Arizonans’ constant cravings for frozen treats. Just last weekend, a new Tasti D-Lite opened in Chandler (4040 S. Arizona Ave.). Local makers Berto’s, Sweet Republic, and Crave Artisan Ice Cream seem to be in growth mode, and even outsiders are getting a foothold here; Cincinnati-based Graeter’s Ice Cream recently debuted in local Fry’s stores.
