Tomorrow, Friday, June 3, is National Donut Day — a special celebration for fans of the satisfyingly sweet, ring-shaped fried cakes looking to score a freebie or two.
Originally established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor the female volunteers known as “lassies” who served donuts to soldiers during World War I, this year, National Donut Day is being celebrated by chains such as Krispy Kreme (free donut of any variety), Dunkin’ Donuts (free donut with the purchase of a beverage), and LaMar’s Donuts (free gourmet donut).
The local donut holes like BoSa Donuts and Rainbow Donuts? Not so much.
Huh? What? Why? As of this posting, employees of both Rainbow Donuts locations and the manager of Bosa Donuts on West Glendale Avenue told me they didn’t know of or weren’t planning on any promotions for National Donut Day. Strange, given the opportunity to celebrate their feature sweet treat and maybe score a few new fans — especially BoSa, which just opened a new location on Indian School Road in Central Phoenix.
