You might think sushi and tempura when you think of Japanese food, but robata-yaki is also a huge part of the cuisine. It’s all of those aromatic grilled foods that taste so good with a cold Sapporo.

Roka Akor is one of the few local Japanese restaurants that actually specialize in it, and now the Scottsdale eatery is planning on teaching customers some of its secrets with Robata Grill 101, to be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 21.

The cooking class will show attendees how to make marinades and prepare a variety of meat, fish, and vegetable dishes, including dry-aged bone-in ribeye. You’ll also get to sample everything and wash it all down with some of Roka Akor’s housemade infused shochu. They’ll send you home with recipes.

It’s $60 per person; call 480-306-8800 to reserve a spot.
