Sonoran hot dogs? Not a damn thing wrong with ’em. Most of us have consumed with fond appreciation our fair share of the bacon-wrapped creations at several joints in the Valley.

But go south — way south — of the border and there’s another Mexican-style hot dog just as flavorful, a bit more elusive, but still begging to be bit all the same.

Get your perro caliente de Oaxaca (Oaxacan hotdog) at Tacos Atoyac, the popular taqueria serving street-style Oaxacan eats in North Phoenix courtesy of owners Pablo Lopez and Dan Maldonado.

Traditionally topped with mole and sesame seeds, Tacos Atoyac’s rendition of the Oaxacan hot dog is deliciously different. A bit less intense than its Sonoran counterpart, it’s just as flavorful, featuring jalapeños, onion, tomato and avocado slices, large pieces of crispy bacon, and zigzags of Mexican sour cream heaped atop a bite-worthy dog nestled into a soft bun coated with bean spread.

$30,000

And, like most of Tacos Atoyac’s eats, this dog comes dirt cheap. At just $3.50, it’s easy to do a doggy double and enjoy the flavors a second time around.
