Last year we marked the hundred day countdown to Best of Phoenix by sharing our 100 Favorite Dishes with you. Now we’re back – with the 2011 edition. Have a suggestion for a dish you’d like us to try? Leave it in the comments section or email laura.hahnefeld@newtimes.com.
78: The Torta El Rey from Tortas El Rey
Sometimes you have to try a dish just to say you conquered it. But unless you’re a trained professional, that’s probably not an option with this absurdly large torta. Instead of conquering this 14 layer monstrosity, you’ll be overindulging for the kitschy sake of consuming a cartoonish menu item more family-sized than single serving sandwich-sized. Just make sure to have a whole contingent of carnivores on hand to finish off this feast.
A picture is worth a thousand words, so we’ll just sum up this super-sized sandwich by stratigraphy alone. First layer: a buttered and toasted telera roll, followed by milanesa de res, slices of pork, a rectangle of ham, chorizo, bacon, sliced hot dogs, melty white cheese, fried eggs, avocados, tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, and some escabeche for good measure. Tums not included.
