If you haven’t tried a pupusa yet, you’re missing out on one of the tastiest ethnic snacks in town.
Last year, I sought out so many pupusas around the Valley that I even wrote a column about them.
These savory Salvadoran treats are similar to a corn tortilla, only thicker, doughier, and stuffed with gooey melted cheese and anything from beans to pork. Cooked on the griddle, they get lightly browned and are too addicting to eat just one. A couple is enough for a meal.
Nosh on all the pupusas you can handle this Sunday at the 4th annual Festival de las Pupusas, sponsored by the Salvadoran Community of Arizona.
Besides pupusas, tamales, and other foods, there will be a DJ and live music performances by Orgullo Boriqua, Grupo Caribe, Grupo Alarma, and more. The event will also feature Puerto Rican and Salvadoran folk ballet, and pinatas and games for the kids.
Everything happens from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. this Sunday in the New Life Church parking lot, 2942 W. Camelback Rd. Admission is a $2 donation and is free for children.
