Musical royalty can be a dodgy thing — think second-generation Zappa or anyone beyond Hank Sr. But Bobby Bare Jr. appears to be the real deal. Junior is the son of Bobby Bare, who can list among his many musical accomplishment 50 Top 40 country hits. It is clear his son was listening well.
Bare the younger first gained notice with a Grammy nomination at the age of 5 and, for the past few years, has toured tirelessly with his chaotic and fun alt-country rock act Bare Jr. BB2 has temporarily shelved Bare Jr. for a turn as a singer-songwriter, having released Young Criminals’ Starvation League this past summer. A back-to-basics take on ’70s country songwriting with horns and musical side roads, League is peopled with unusual and sympathetic characters drenched in emotional nakedness, anger, and Bare’s sonorous and, at times, loopy vocals.
Sure to be more kicked-back than the balls-out rockin’ of Bare Jr., the son’s show might be worth the price of admission just to hear him introduce the song “Flat Chested Girl from Maynardville.”
