Outlaw country legend Jessi Colter has never slowed down. She’s most famous for her heartbreaking lovesick ballad “I’m Not Lisa” and her 1970s collaboration with late husband Waylon Jennings, but in the past 10 years, Colter has been busy, too. She’s released a compilation of her own work and a studio album called Out of the Ashes, which deals with Jennings’ passing and draws on the healing inspiration of her Arizona desert home. Her local ties run deep, as she’s lending herself to this year’s annual “Chickstock,” a one-day music festival that showcases female musicians. Locals competed for a spot at the performance to play alongside country greats like Colter, Jamie O’Neal (the Australian best known for a song of lost love titled “There Is No Arizona”), and Sarah Darling. The show will also include a slew of local female-fronted bands and singer-songwriters, including Black Carl and Carey Slade. And in the true spirit of sisterhood, the profits from the event will go to fund breast cancer research. Talk about doin’ all right for a girl.
