Voodoo Swing, an old-timey Phoenix rockabilly band, got a little help from Meat Puppet Cris Kirkwood on their record, Voodoo Beans. Some of the new tracks are already up on the band’s MySpace page.
The record, set for release early next month, is very traditional roots music, and marks the start of what Kirkwood hopes will be a new direction in his career. The Puppets’ most recent album, Sewn Together, came out a year ago.
“I really dug Voodoo Swing’s great on-stage charisma as well as their powerful musicianship,” Kirkwood said in a press release. “Record production is a new phase for me and I felt there would be no better place to start than with a great roots music combo like Voodoo Swing.”
“I wanted something I could be proud of. You just know good music when you hear it.”

Like Kirkwood, Voodoo Swing are no spring chickens. The band released its first record in 1993 on the British record label Nervous Records, playing with other ’90s revivalists like The Reverend
Horton Heat and The Dave and Deke Combo. Phoenix’s rockabilly scene, you may have read, is pretty strong.
