In this week’s issue, Anthony Sandoval brings us the story of Gospel Claws/Through and Through Gospel Review songwriter Joel Marquard’s battle with testicular cancer.
We’re happy to report that he beat it, and proud of the way the Valley’s indie rock scene has stepped up to help the dude out with his mounting medical bills. By now you’re probably pretty aware that Saturday, July 14 is going to be a big one: What Laura Says, Snake! Snake! Snakes!, Ladylike, ROAR, Yellow Minute, and Marquard’s dual projects, Gospel Claws and Through and Through Gospel Review are set to perform at the Crescent Ballroom.
But that’s not all. Common Wall Media has gone ahead and rounded up new music from a host of bands (that’s the album cover over there), like Black Carl, The Go Reflex, Mergence, and El Sonida de Reposa. The comp is available for download at BandCamp, and download cards will be available at the show.
When news happens, Phoenix New Times is there —
Your support strengthens our coverage.
We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to you. If New Times matters to you, please take action and contribute today, so when news happens, our reporters can be there.
The comp also features new music from Gospel Claws, touched on by Sandoval in his description of the band’s upcoming record. He writes: “…the record’s influences — ’50s doo-wop, Sam Cooke, and the Beach Boys — don’t point to an aggressive sound, but [Marquard] says it shouldn’t be much much mellower than the group’s 2010 debut C-L-A-W-S.”
But they say and MP3 is worth at least a couple dozen words, so go ahead and download a new track, “Pale Horse Dry Cleaning,” courtesy of Common Wall Media, and let us know what you think in the comments.
