Here’s a fun fact about seminal 80’s band The Tubes — their origins are in Phoenix. Tubes’ founders Bill “Sputnick” Spooner and late keyboardist Vince Welnick were born and raised in Phoenix, playing in early high school bands before packing up shop, moving to San Francisco in the late 60’s and eventually forming The Tubes. Most — myself included — only know The Tubes by their 1983 top 10 hit “She’s a Beauty,” yet they also had some success with “Talk To Ya Later” and “White Punks on Dope.”
So what do the music videos for “She’s a Beauty” and Billy Squier’s “Rock Me Tonite,” Michael Jackson’s This Is It, Newsies, Xanadu and all three High School Musicals have in common? They were all directed by living genius Kenny Ortega (although you wouldn’t be able to tell from Squier’s rather awful video — hell, it’s not Ortega’s fault Squier dances like Ed Grimley and looks butch in a pink tanktop).
I digress — especially if Kenny Ortega is involved. Seizing the day with The Tubes are Jónsi, Caribou, k-os, Surfer Blood and Best Coast.
