John Lennon’s 70th birthday would have been October 9 and Phoenix’s Musical Instrument Museum has planned events to mark the occasion.

The museum houses the Steinway Lennon used to “Imagine” — not the fancy white grand piano people remember, but a more modest brown Steinway pictured right — which is one of its main attractions.

Beatles music comes from Tetra String Quartet, which will be playing selections from the Abbey Road album at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Even the museum’s self-playing DeCap Dance Organ will add a Beatles number to its repertoire.

The (ahem) icing on top? The MIM Coffee Shop will offer free birthday cupcakes to visitors on a first-come, first-served basis.

The events to honor the late Beatle coincide with some very important related news for the museum. So MIM looks forward to hosting John Lennon fans on October 9 and throughout 2011.
