The True Music Festival, scheduled for Saturday, December 14, at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, announced its first five performers on Tuesday, and it’s a solid slate: In addition to noted festival heroes the Flaming Lips, the festival is bringing in Wiz Khalifa, Bassnectar, Capital Cities, and Lord Huron.
What do the Flaming Lips, Wiz Khalifa, and Bassnectar have in common, exactly? Well, they’ll all probably bring sizable crowds in, for one thing, and for another, I’m sure psychedelic rock fans and Wiz Khalifa fans can find at least one common interest.
This won’t be the first festival appearance in the Valley for the Flaming Lips, who headlined the McDowell Mountain Music Festival back in 2009. Wiz Khalifa played Mesa Amphitheatre back in 2011, during which his audience, looking “like it belonged at a Scottsdale high school pep rally,” left a cloud of smoke in its wake. Just in case you’re looking to get prepared early.
The first announcements are something of a coup for True Music Festival — it puts them ahead of the so-far ill-fated Liquid Sol Festival, which was supposed to take place over three days in Florence about three weeks from now — but it’ll still be a while before we see just how the festival takes shape.

They’re pre-selling tickets, though, so unless The Flaming Lips send them a very confused Facebook message sometime in the next couple of hours it looks like this festival is for real.
