Get your illicit substances and Syd Barrett bootlegs in order: Austin psych band The Black Angels are bringing their droney rock ‘n’ roll sound to the Rhythm Room this Wednesday, May 18.

The band’s latest album, 2010’s Phosphene Dream, comes courtesy of Blue Horizon Records, legendary for its mid-’60s blues output. The label was relaunched last year with the release of the ‘Angels album by Richard Gottehrer and Seymour Stein, founders of the influential New Wave/punk label Sire Records.

The Black Angels have all of their psych credentials in order: named after The Velvet Underground’s “Black Angels Death Song,” the Austin act has backed up Roky Erickson, godfather of Texas psych and iconic songwriter behind The 13th Floor Elevators and The Aliens.

The film Night of the Vampire, released last year, documents the band performing with Erickson at the El Ray Theatre on Halloween in 2008.
