What’s the top selling digital download of the decade — and, thus unsurprisingly, also the top selling digital download of all time?
If you guessed Flo Rida’s “Low” you’re smarter than I am.
After bursting onto the scene in late 2007, Poe Boy/Atlantic recording artist Flo Rida has claimed a digital first. The Miami-based rapper’s debut smash single “Low,” from his debut album MAIL ON SUNDAY, has been named the top-selling digital song of the decade with over 5.2 million digital downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In addition, his 2009 hit single “Right Round” ranks #11 this decade, with nearly 4 million digital downloads sold.
Turns out the Miami MC is a computerized machine: “Right Round,” from his 2009 album “R.O.O.T.S.” remains the highest-selling digital debut of all time. The track is also the highest selling one-week digital single in history, with more than 636,000 downloads sold its debut week. To claim that mark he beat his own record, as “Low,” now ranks #2 all-time with more than 467,000 digital downloads sold in a single week.

In case you’re wondering how this stacks up next to Flo’s traditional sales figures, “Low” also ranks high on a handful of decade-end charts: #3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, #4 on the Nielsen RingScan chart, #5 on Nielsen’s BDS Pop Songs chart, #8 on Billboard’s Radio Songs chart, and #13 on Nielsen’s BDS Rap Songs chart.
Flo Rida is currently in the studio recording his third album, yet to be titled. The collection is expected to be released Spring 2010 and which time it will almost certainly dominate the iTunes charts.
Any theories on why this guy does so well on the interwebs? Is it just that his singles are so obviously great but also obviously part of an actual album you have no interest in owning, or is there more to it?
