Just reading the Arizona Republic story about the murder of a 16-year-old boy in west Phoenix on November 1–yet another tragic urban tale about needless urban violence and loss.
Here is that story.
It reports the arrests by Phoenix police of four young men on suspicion of murder and other charges, and names two of the suspects, both of them 18-year-olds.
“Two 17-year-olds were also arrested,” the story explains. “However, the Republic does not identify juvenile defendants unless they are charged as an adult.”
OK, we got that straight–at least until the last paragraph of the story.
“Contreras, Vasquez, Velasquez and Barragan are expected to face charges ranging from first-degree homicide, aggravated assault and drive-by shooting,” it ends.
We’d heard about those first two alleged punks–the 18-year-olds–way up in the piece.
As for Velasquez and Barragan, first reference.
We do suspect those juveniles had first names when the reporter sent her first draft in for editing.
