Bad news for nativists: the United States will become a “white minority” in about 30 years, according to a recent study of census data.
But wait — there’s more bad news for racists living in Arizona: the Grand Canyon State is among 10 states where white children already are a minority.
According to a Brookings Institute review of 2010 census information, the number of white children in the U.S. has dropped by 4.3 million since 2000. Meanwhile, the population of Hispanic and Asian kids grew by 5.5 million.
According to the report, white people make up nearly two-thirds of the adult population in Arizona. However, just under 42 percent of children in the state are white.

Tucson’s population of white children is shrinking more than those of most large metro areas, with only 36 percent of the youth population being Caucasian. In Phoenix, the study finds, about 43 percent of all children are white.
According to the study “new minorities” — Asians, Hispanics, and other groups apart from whites, blacks, and American Indians — account for all of the growth in the child population, as other groups’ child population is shrinking.
The study finds that, at the current rate, the United States will be a “white minority” country by 2042.
“With a rapidly aging white population, the United States depends increasingly on these new minorities to infuse its youth population — and eventually its labor force — with needed demographic heft and vitality,” the report concludes.
