The Phoenix Police Department just announced that an investigation has been opened into the case of a dead baby found in a box authorities believe was shipped from Phoenix to McAllen, Texas.

Earlier today, the Phoenix P.D. said it had limited knowledge of the case.

“Although they cite Phoenix as being the origin of the package, our homicide investigators have not been contacted by their investigators,” Phoenix P.D. Sergeant Steve Martos said.

Now, Martos says, the the department’s homicide unit has launched an investigation. Detectives are awaiting the completion of a preliminary investigation by authorities in Texas, so details are still fairly limited.

According to KNES in San Antonio, Texas, the baby was found in a box shipped to a clothing distribution center in McAllen, Texas, at some point in the last 24 hours.

The box was delivered to the plant last night by a truck carrying used clothing from Phoenix to McAllen. Workers at the plant found the baby stuffed in clothing.

There are reports that the umbilical cord was still attached to the body when it was discovered in Texas. The baby has not been identified.
