A Yuma man found Cocopah Police Chief James Spurgeon’s gun the other day — because the man’s 6-year-old son was pointing it right at him.
The Yuma Police Department is investigating the incident, as a police spokesman says Spurgeon left it at an acquaintance’s apartment in the city.
Police say Spurgeon accidentally left his gun behind after visiting this acquiaintance on Saturday, and the next morning, the 6-year-old boy pointed his new gun at dad.
The man was able to disarm his boy without incident, and the youngster told his father that he just found it on the floor.

Yuma police say it would appear that Spurgeon endangered the two adults and two children who lived in that apartment.
A Yuma Police Department statement says it’s currently investigating, and will hand over the report to the Yuma County Attorney’s Office for possible charges when the investigation is completed.
The Cocopah Indian Tribe issued a statement saying it’s “definitely out of character” for Spurgeon — a cop for almost 30 years — to do something like this, adding that they’re not going to comment on the incident until the Yuma Police Department finishes its investigation.
