Cox Communications is establishing super-fast Internet service in the Phoenix area with speeds on par with Google Fiber.

The announcement from Cox comes just a few months after Google announced it planned to offer gigabit broadband service, which Google has billed as “100 times faster than today’s basic broadband.”

Google Fiber’s planned expansion to Phoenix also includes Tempe and Scottsdale, but Cox’s gigabit service will include Chandler, according to Chandler Vice Mayor Rick Heumann:

A download speed of 1 gigabit per second is 20 times faster than Cox’s “premier” Internet service, which boasts download speeds up to 50 megabits per second.
