Phoenix officials are pretty amped about downtown’s first dog park, calling its opening a “great day” and the “most exciting thing” for dogs and their owners to happen in a decade.
The off-leash area for dogs at the northwestern part of the park on Culver Street between 3rd and 5th avenues is the sixth dog park in the city. It will open at 8 a.m. on October 5.
Councilman Tom Simplot, in a press release, says that “this is the most exciting thing in central Phoenix to impact dogs and their owners in almost ten years!”
Councilman Michael Nowakowski chimes in with: “This is a great day for the residents of Downtown Phoenix, especially our four-legged friends. It took a true community effort to make this dog park a reality – and now the real fun begins! I look forward to seeing a whole new energy in one of our city’s most unique urban parks.”

Features of the dog park:
- Separately fenced ADA-accessible areas for large and small dogs.
- Large-dog area is .76 acre; small-dog area is .23 acre.
- Decorative wrought iron fencing.
- Chilled water fountains with integrated drinking bowls at ground level for pooches.
- ADA-accessible benches.
- Gabion (stone) wall sound buffers, with integrated Plexiglas visibility panels, along the park’s northern edge.
- 18 large Pistache and Ash trees (up to 15 feet tall at planting).
