The school careers of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Jared Lee Loughner couldn’t be more different.
Both are from Tucson. The similarities end there.
Long before she set foot on Capitol Hill, Gabrielle Giffords was paving her way to a life in politics. She graduated from the prestigious University High School in Tucson, then attended Scripps College in Claremont, California, where the above photos were taken. She made the dean’s list three semesters in a row and won a slew of academic awards, including a much-coveted Fulbright Scholarship to study Old Colony Mennonites in Northern Mexico.

Jared Lee Loughner barely made his high school yearbook.
Above are the faces of Loughner over the course of his career at Mountain View High in Tucson. He played the saxophone in his high school band his freshman and sophomore years, and school mate Caitie Parker said he had plenty of friends up until an alcohol poisoning experience in 2006 which seems to have contributed to his departure from school.
In the past few days, only a few photos of Loughner have circulated. A photo taken by Pima County sheriff’s deputies following his arrest will likely be the image most remember.
