Former state Senator Jim Waring seems to be the man to beat in the GOP primary for the district three Congressional seat but Ben Quayle, son of former Vice President Dan Quayle, might be the man to beat him — despite having no apparent campaign platform other than his last name.

A poll released yesterday gives Waring an 18-point lead over any other candidate in the race, with 43 percent of the vote. The closest to Waring is Quayle, with about 25 percent.

The poll released yesterday may not be the most accurate barometer, though.

The poll was conducted by The Summit Consulting Group, a political consulting agency with plans to work on Waring’s campaign.

In a different poll, conducted about two weeks ago by the Lincoln Strategy Group, Waring still held a small lead but he was in a statistical dead heat with Quayle and Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker.

Regardless of which poll you look at, Quayle’s entrance to the race has effected Waring’s poll numbers.

Despite the possibility that Waring’s pollsters may be playing favorites, Waring’s poll numbers in the Summit poll have dropped since Quayle entered the race.

Another Summit poll, released the day before Quayle’s pops spilled the beans on his son’s candidacy, gave Waring 50 percent of the vote, 25 percentage points higher than any other candidate in the race.

So who is this Ben Quayle and what does he stand for? Who knows? As far as we can tell he has no campaign Web site, has not returned our calls, and is very limited in his encounters with the media, yet he still leads every candidate in the race with the exception of Waring.

Looks like the less we know the better for the Quayle clan.
