Scottsdale Lieutenant Mike Stauffer hopes to unseat Joe Arpaio, 79, as the Republican nominee for Maricopa County Sheriff — and he wants to let you know where he stands on the issues.
So Stauffer’s agreed to answer any question you have in New Times’ inaugural online town hall meeting.
Arpaio was extended the same invitation. He declined.
When asked if he’d be willing to submit to questions from constituents, a spokesman for America’s self-proclaimed “toughest sheriff” tells New Times, “I think you know the answer to that question.”

We take no offense to the sheriff’s declining our invitation. We know he’s a busy guy; he’s got an important Taco Bell lunch date with the winner of his Inmate Coloring Contest scheduled for this morning — and those tacos ain’t gonna eat themselves.
Here’s how our online town hall will work: in the comment section of this post, you can ask Lieutenant Stauffer anything that’s on your mind — Tent City, immigration sweeps, lawsuits, modernizing communication systems, SB 1070, Elvis-themed panty parties, Inmate Coloring Contests…whatever.
He’ll be watching, and he has pledged to answer as many of your questions as possible between 7:30 a.m. and the end of the day.
